The Giving of Thanks

I love this time of year! Mostly because of the meaning behind the season but also because people seem to have more joy and are more thankful for the wonderful gifts others and God has given them. But the season of thanks seems to go just as quick as it came, and right around the same time that our New Years’ resolutions fall apart the season of thanks ends as well. So why is it that we only give thanks for a few months a year and then go back to the same old the rest of the year? In my opinion, it all has to do with our pride, busyness, and selfishness. We forget what this life is really about for the rest of the year.

During Thanksgiving and Christmas, we are all reminded of the great gifts that God has given us and we rejoice in those, but when we go back to work and our normal lives we forget to look for God in the small things. We forget to give Him credit for all the things we do and we have. Our thankful hearts are overtaken but the hustle and bustle of life. We forget that everything is a gift that we truly do not deserve. Many might try to dispute this by saying that they are the ones who woke up early and went to work to earn the paycheck that paid for this and that but who woke them up that morning and who kept them safe throughout that day? Who gave them breath in their lungs and a heart in their chest? Who made the way for them to get where they are today? God did and God provides everything we have from the moment we are born until the moment we die.

So this thanksgiving instead of just being thankful for the time off and the food on the table I challenge you to look around at everything you have and be thankful for all of those gifts as well. I also challenge you to carry the habit of being thankful for God’s gifts throughout the entire year and to not let it just be an afterthought throughout the year.
