Dependent

If you have read any of my posts before you know that I typically write about something that is happening around me. I like to analyze those things and ask what God can teach me through this.  Because of this you can expect all of my blogs for the foreseeable future will probably be revolving around my son who was recently born. Since my life revolves around him currently I seem to be finding God’s lessons in everything. 

Over the last 9 months my husband and I have been preparing to welcome our first child. Between taking a birthing class, doing research and talking to our friends and family, we thought we were prepared… that was until we held him in our arms and realized that no amount of preparation can cover all the unknowns. Being a parent is a very humbling experience. You tend to call the experts for advice or reference google to make sure.  It makes you put aside what you think is right for what is actually right for the child. Children look at the world differently than adults. A child doesn’t care about your job, your title, your bank account, or your appearance. They need you in spite and regardless of those things.  The only thing that a child needs is love, care, and attention.  Children are completely dependent on the love, care, and attention that their caregiver offers. That dependency makes them the most humble of people. 

Matthew 18:4 tells us to be humble like a child,  “Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”   This is the same concept we hear when we are told that the first will be last and that last will be first. We could learn a lot from the humility of children. Like I said previously, children don’t care about the status of their caregivers, but they also have no care for their personal status either.  They know they will be loved and cared for as long as they follow the rules put in place by the adults.  The rules that are put in places for safety. The older we get the more we begin to look at a person’s status and allow that to define them in our eyes. 

We are perfectly made by a perfect God!  Psalms 139:14 says, “I praise you, because I am wonderfully made; wonderful are your works! My very self you know.”  So when we try to define ourselves as anything other than a child of God we are denying God’s goodness.  God did not create us to put each other in boxes and definitely someone’s worth by what they do. We are all His children. 

I will leave you with these two things to think about. First, we wouldn’t  judge a child for being dependent on their parents, so why do we judge others who are dependent on God?  Secondly, when we judge others based on status are we just doing so in order to make ourselves feel better?
